Skimming and scanning for Band 7+ Reading
How to move through IELTS Reading passages without drowning in detail — and still hit the question types that cost you marks.
Why most candidates run out of time
IELTS Reading is a time problem, not a vocabulary problem. You have 60 minutes for 40 questions. If you try to understand every sentence, you will finish Passage 3 in a panic.
Native-level readers still fail this paper because they read like a novel. Band 7+ candidates read like examiners: they know what the question is asking before they look at the text.
Skimming: get the map
Skim each passage in 2–3 minutes. You are looking for:
- the topic of each paragraph
- names, dates, and contrast words (however, whereas, in fact)
- the writer's overall stance
Do not stop for unknown words. Circle them and keep moving.
Scanning: hunt the answer
Once you know the question type, scan for a keyword or paraphrase. True/False/Not Given and matching headings punish slow readers. True means the text says it. False means the text says the opposite. Not Given means the text is silent.
Practice drill
- Cover the questions. Skim Passage 1 in two minutes and write one phrase per paragraph.
- Uncover questions 1–6 only. Scan — do not re-read the whole text.
- Check timing. If a question takes more than 90 seconds, guess, mark it, and return later.
This is the same process I use with 1:1 students targeting Band 7–8. Speed first, then accuracy.
