IELTS Speaking. A full guide.

On this page, you will find a full guide to the speaking exam, including modal answers, tips and tricks, and various common topics that frequently come up on each part of the exam.

Parts of the exam.

IELTS Speaking Part 1 lasts around four to five minutes and focuses on familiar, everyday topics such as work or studies, hobbies, home life, and personal interests. The examiner asks straightforward questions to help candidates feel comfortable and to assess their ability to communicate basic information clearly and naturally. This part tests fluency, pronunciation, and grammatical accuracy in simple responses, and candidates are expected to give short but developed answers rather than single words.

IELTS Speaking Part 2 is known as the long turn and lasts three to four minutes. Candidates are given a task card with a topic and several prompts, along with one minute to prepare notes before speaking for up to two minutes without interruption. The topics usually involve describing a person, place, experience, or object from personal life. This section evaluates a candidate’s ability to speak at length, organise ideas logically, and use a wide range of vocabulary while maintaining coherence and clarity.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 is a discussion-based section lasting four to five minutes and explores more abstract ideas connected to the topic in Part 2. The examiner asks deeper questions that require candidates to express opinions, compare ideas, and discuss social or cultural issues in more detail. This part is particularly important for higher band scores, as it assesses the ability to develop complex ideas, use advanced grammar structures, and communicate opinions clearly and confidently.
