Master the Writing Test and Switch to a Higher Band

The IELTS Writing test is one of the most challenging parts of the exam, and also the part where most students get stuck at Band 6 or 6.5. At IELTS Switch, we break down the writing test into simple, clear systems that help you understand exactly what the examiners want, how to structure your ideas, and how to avoid the mistakes that keep thousands of learners below Band 7.

The Writing test lasts 60 minutes and is divided into two tasks, each testing different skills.

Task 1: Academic / General Training

Depending on your test type, Task 1 will be different:

Academic Writing Task 1

You will be given a chart, graph, diagram, process or map.
Your goal is to:

  • Summarise the main trends

  • Select and compare key information

  • Report the data clearly and objectively

  • Write at least 150 words

This task focuses on your ability to describe visual information in an academic style.

General Training Writing Task 1

You will write a formal, semi-formal, or informal letter.
You must:

  • Respond to a clear situation or request

  • Use appropriate tone and style

  • Organise your ideas logically

  • Write at least 150 words

This tests your ability to communicate for everyday or workplace situations.

Task 2: Essay Writing (Academic & General Training)

Task 2 is the same for both versions of the exam.
You will write an essay of at least 250 words in response to a question on a social, educational, or general topic.

You may need to:

  • Give an opinion

  • Discuss both sides of an issue

  • Suggest solutions

  • Evaluate advantages and disadvantages

  • Answer a direct, multi-part question

Task 2 contributes twice as much to your Writing band score as Task 1, making it the most important part of the test.
