Academic Task 1: the overview is not optional
Why missing a clear overview caps you below Band 7 on Task Achievement — and how to write one in two sentences.
What an overview is
After the introduction, write two sentences that capture the main trends. No numbers yet.
Good: Overall, energy from renewables rose steadily while coal declined, and country A remained the largest producer throughout.
Weak: The graph shows information about energy. That is not an overview.
Then select data
You cannot describe every figure. Group: start vs end, highest vs lowest, exceptions.
Language
Comparatives and approximations: just under, roughly twice, a sharp rise. Avoid I think. There is no opinion in Academic Task 1.
